Car Suspension 101: What Are The Symptoms That Your Control Arm Assembly is Failing

Every part of a car should function properly for the whole vehicle to give its optimal performance. For instance, if a Benz owner notices that something is wrong — he or she must look for Mercedes Benz used parts online or visit authorized vendors to resolve the issue.

In this particular article, we’re specifically giving you tips on how to know if your control arm assembly is failing.

How Important is the Control Arm

Also called as the A-arm, the control arm assembly is part of almost every automobile’s suspension system. Complete with bushings and ball joints, this suspension link joins the wheel hub and steering knuckles to the chassis. The bushings act as a cushion to the suspension system, helping control noise and vibrations. The ball joints, on the other hand, enable the wheel and the suspension to move harmoniously together.

If the control arm goes bad, you will experience a decrease in your suspension system’s flexibility. Your comfort and the way you handle your vehicle will also be negatively affected. This is why experts recommend having your control arm checked before it’s too late. You might also be advised to look for Mercedes Benz used parts online in case a replacement s needed.

Symptoms that Indicate You Have a Bad Control Arm

How will you know if you have a failing control arm assembly? Here are four symptoms to watch out for:

You start hearing a clunking noise

When the bushings and ball joints start to wear and become loose over time, this can cause them to knock when you start to take off or when you traverse through rough roads. You might also hear this clunking noise following a bump, a brake, or a hard turn. When you drive at low speeds, a bad control arm will also produce a rattling noise.

You notice that there’s too much wheel movement

You might have a control arm problem if you begin to experience too much movement from your wheels. This especially becomes problematic when you’re driving on a busy road and it starts to pull to the left or the right even without input from the steering wheel. If this happens, you should consult an expert because a consistent correction is needed to steer your vehicle straight.

Your steering wheel vibrates when you drive at a higher speed

Your steering wheel can be shimmy if your control arm’s bushings and ball joints are already worn out. This, in turn, causes vibrations — which may increase when you accelerate or drive at higher speeds (usually between 45 to 60 miles per hour). Besides having a faulty control arm, this issue can also be attributed to misalignment or bent wheels.

Your tires have unusual wear patterns

Tires naturally undergo the process of wear and tear, especially when you’re a frequent driver. However, you should be alarmed when you notice that there’s an unusual wear pattern among your tires, or when you see wear on the inside or outside edge of your tires. This is also a symptom that your control arm might need some repair.
